Writers’ Building Kolkata
When you stand at the BBD Bag square, one of the oldest and most crowded places in Kolkata – surely you shall be able to see the Red Writers’ Building!The construction had started in 1777 – and later was the office of the British writers of East India Company. Further, till 2013 – the Writers’ building has been the office of the Chief Minister of West Bengal!It is a massive red color building situated at the BBD Bag square of Kolkata which is the heart of the city and constituting gigantic buildings from the Victorian age. The buildings are all occupied by various offices for decades.
However, there have been several legends which are heard, about paranormal activities which happen within, after dusk! It is said that there are various halls / ball rooms within the building - vacant and sealed for years, and are suspected to be haunted. Various stories claim that these unoccupied / vacant rooms are spooky and ghosts dwell in here after the sun sets. None of the officials in the building stays here in the evening and night. The nearby vendors outside the building have reported sounds of someone crying late at night, which can be heard echoing! TheWriters’ Building is currently going through renovations, where there have been century old files and printed documents cleaned up. The Govt. is looking forward to restore this heritage building, for future!
The South Park Street Cemetery is one of the famous tourist spots in Kolkata. The tall lush green trees, century old tombs and peaceful surrounding attract various tourists and locales as well. Most of the graves here belong to British Soldiers. The cemetery is one of the oldest burial grounds of the city. It was constructed in 1767 and now believed to be haunted. The reports of the cemetery being haunted and spooky are not in numbers, but there are a few who claim to have experienced something unusual after visiting the place.
One report says that while visiting the place a group of friends clicked pictures and later they found a weird shadow shaped like a fist in front of the lens. Soon the weird things started happening with each of them, the one who clicked the picture had an asthma attack and surprisingly he became an asthma patient for life.
Rabindra Sarovar Tube Rail Station
Rabindra Sarovar is an area in Kolkata, comprising of a beautiful lake within the very crowded city of Kolkata! It is an artificial lake in the south of Kolkata and has people of all ages visiting every day.
The nearby metro/ tube rail station of Rabindra Sarovar is one of the busiest in Kolkata having trains running from 7am in the morning till 10pm at night. However, it has also earned a name of hosting the ghosts of all those commuters who have committed suicide in the tube rails of Kolkata in the last 20 years!It is still not know, how much might be the severity, as hundreds commit suicide in the tube tracks – but it is known of people who board the last train have some weird experiences and some have also reported dull shadows following them during late evenings.
Hastings House, Alipore
Hastings house is a small part of Belvedere Estate. The Belvedere Estate was one of the oldest establishments in Alipore, an old and traditional area of south Kolkata!
During the British rule - Governor General Warren Hastings built Hasting House for himself in the mid-eighteenth century and then it became the Governor’s residence until the Government House came up later. Today, it is the Women’s College of Calcutta University.
The college students here have reported different incidents that are spooky. Some say they have seen a man riding a horse entering the campus and searching some documents. They believe it to be the ghost of Warren Hastings himself dated back from the 1770s. Others have reported about the spirit of a boy who died here while playing football, since then no one plays here. One girl has reported of a woman who was possessed, while many others of shadows of Englishmen from the Victorian age who troll the campus at night!
The National Library
The National Library also lies in Belvedere Estate premise. The National Library is known for its rare collection of books. Few people who are a regular visitor here have reported some eerie stories about the building. They have heard the sounds of footsteps and believe that it is the Governor’s wife who has haunted this place.
The new constructed wing of the building also has some spooky trails reported by people working there. During the construction, few workers met with some severe accident and died on the spot. It is believed that their spirits linger around that area.
The Oberoi Grand Hotel
The Oberoi Grand Hotel Kolkata is one is of highest rated five star deluxe hotels in the city. The hotel is known for its heritage look and beautiful interiors from the Victorian age.The building was initially the residence of a British colonel, Col. Grand. Later, the building was turned into a boarding house and later into a theatre which was thereafter in 1911 the theatre burned down, only to be sold to one of the shareholders Stephen, who converted it into the Grand Hotel. Later, between 1939-1943, it was bought and renovated by Mr. Mohan Singh Oberoi, the father of The Oberoi Group of Hotels.
The Hotel have had experienced many unusual events which are believed to be real and are still discussed. The hotel’s one wing – the ‘Chowringhee wing’ is known to be closed, sealed and walled off – which is believed to be the haunted area of the hotel. Several rooms in that wing are sealed and walled up, separating the wing from the guest and employee vicinity. There is also another legend of a pianist named Teddy Weatherford in the 1940s – who died in 1945 of Cholera. Stories of him stalking the corridors started shortly after, with employees reporting knocks on door and piano at a distance.
The Indian Museum Kolkata
The National Museum on Chowringhee Road was transferred to its current location in 1878 with two galleries. Now the gigantic building holds close to sixty galleries of art inside its premises.
The place is a well-known haunted location of the city. People have heard a lot of sounds made by the traditional anklets worn by women during dance performances and also dragging of heap of clothes can be heard sometimes. A real mummy from Egypt lies in this museum. It is believed that the ghost owners of the properties which lies at the residence guards them from thieves.
However, directors or the organization, past and present, have refuted all these claims.
I am myself an employee of The Oberoi Grand Kolkata....I have heard many things but had never seen them.......but yes some areas of the hotel is strictly guarded and walled off for some unexplained reasons....
ReplyDeleteMy commerce teacher told that one of her best friend's friend also works in the hotel and she told her that strange things happen in that hotel like there is an abandoned floor but sometimes the phone in the reception gets a call from the rooms in that floor. The one who r old never see that whereas new comes who do not know have gone fo that floor for that purpose and then have found nothing.
